The Heritage of Turner and Newall
The Heritage of Turner and Newall (T.B.A) in Hindley Green.
Families from Hindley Green and district have lost loved ones, others are presently suffering with asbestos related illnesses some of whom have never worked in the industry. We have witnesses who speak of playing with "silvery snow" or "white fluffy stuff" when they were children in the fields north of Turners Brothers' Factory.
We have reports of glass marbles being collected by children other reports of blue/green crystals being found around the area.
Yet they tell us that this is not real evidence of asbestos contamination and is classed as just "Hearsay".
We also had the Scowcroft campaign and enquiry (1997) that fought off Opencast Mining on land surrounding the Turner Brothers site.
We even have rumours of asbestos being found on nearby farms.
Yet all the above counts for nothing, we still need hard evidence of toxic contamination and unless we get some scientific ground surveys of the the area it's difficult to prove otherwise.
Wigan Council and the proposed land developers (Peel) are very quiet or seem unwilling to accept the need for tests to be carried out.
If a planning application is submitted what guarantees have we got that a full and proper site analysis is carried out?
Once construction machinery enters the site and start digging it could be too late if contamination is then found and disturbed.
T.B.A at Hindley Green was managed by the same regime that was in control at Spodden Valley in Rochdale so it's possible similar illegal practices have occurred here in Hindley?
I lived in Brecon Drive, Hindley Green for 23 years bringing up three children who all played in the fields between Turners factory and our home, it's for their future that we must get the truth.
Surely it's better to investigate now rather than wait for the possible terrible consequences in years to come!
If this development does go ahead and Asbestos is then found then both Wigan Council a Peel Holdings should be held to account.
